During the winter, many northerners begin to plan their escape to our sunny state of Florida, and we would love to welcome you to the Treasure Coast, located on the Southeast coast of Florida, and includes the counties of Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and the northern part of Palm Beach. Our slice of paradise is a popular destination for tourists. If you’re planning a visit or considering a move here to the Treasure Coast, it’s essential to understand the concept of snowbird season.

So let’s kick things off by defining WHEN snowbird season is.

Snowbird season is from October to April or May-ish. Typically, the end of the season depends on when Easter is celebrated. So whatever month Easter is celebrated in that particular year, the season will conclude at the end of that month.  For example, Easter is April 9th this year, and most Snowbirds will stay until the end of this month and leave to head home. Or, as we say, the snowbirds are flying home!

And it’s probably pretty obvious why this is our season, as the weather is mild and usually much warmer than in other parts of the country. Because of this, during snowbird season, you can expect the population of the Treasure Coast to increase significantly. Not only is it snowbird season, but it’s also tourist season, and the area’s restaurants, shops, and attractions are at their busiest.

But don’t let the seasonal population increase drive you away. During snowbird season, the beaches fill with sunbathers, the parks are bustling with visitors, and the golf courses are packed with players. However, there are also other benefits to enjoy, such as…

Winter on the Treasure Coast

Health benefits: warm weather and sunny days can positively affect mental and physical health.  There’s nothing like having the real Vitamin D sink into your skin in glorious weather.  It only takes about 10-30 minutes to maintain a healthy level of Vitamin D

Social engagement: Have fun with like-minded people and enjoy the companionship and camaraderie of others who are also escaping the brutal winter weather.

Outdoor activities: golfing, fishing, boating, beach-going, and so much more are available.  So pack your clubs, your pickleball, and/or tennis rackets, and you will always find someone to pick up a game with you.

Cultural enrichment: Snowbirds bring a diverse mix of people, cultures, and traditions, which can help to enrich the local culture and provide new perspectives. Plus, see the culture and historical venues in our part of the country.  You may want to watch this video on things to do in Stuart, Florida.

Economic boost: This one is a little more self-serving however, more money is spent on accommodation, dining, shopping, and entertainment to sustain our business year-round. Snowbirds create jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry, and businesses welcome you with open arms.

Check out our local event calendar here on the Treasure Coast! During snowbird season, we are filled with festivals, concerts, and other activities, making it a great time to experience all the area has to offer with our vibrant culture and community.

Those are the Pros of visiting.

The Cons of snowbird season on the Treasure Coast

The costs of housing: Hotels/motels/air B & B are higher priced during the season.  Usually, the higher prices begin from October 1st to May 1st.  If cost is an issue, visit us in the off-season; believe me, we have plenty of air conditioning and waterways for you to cool off.

The cost of restaurants: Of course, everything has gone up in price, but sometimes menus may have higher costs in season too.

The crowds: As wonderful as our weather is, the crowds can be annoying.  Our roads are busier, making a reservation at a restaurant is mandatory in season, and parking can be challenging.

I would take these con’s anytime to go out into this magnificent weather, smell the salt air, and enjoy all this area has to offer.

In conclusion, whether you’re planning a visit or considering a move to the Treasure Coast of Florida, it’s essential to understand the concept of “season.” Knowing when the area is busiest and quieter can help you plan your trip, move accordingly, and maximize your experience.
