In this article, I’ll highlight the top five reasons why I love living in Stuart, delve into the current housing prices, touch upon a few drawbacks, and give you a glimpse of what makes this area truly special.

The Allure of Water, Water, Water

When I think of Stuart, the first thing that comes to mind is the abundance of water. Situated on the eastern coast of Florida, along the St. Lucie River and the Atlantic Ocean, Stuart offers breathtaking natural beauty with its pristine beaches, scenic waterways, and lush vegetation. The warm climate and ample sunshine create an ideal environment for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy water sports such as boating, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Additionally, the area is dotted with numerous parks, nature preserves, golf courses, and facilities for tennis and pickleball, catering to the diverse interests of residents and visitors alike.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of Stuart is its friendly and welcoming community. Numerous clubs, organizations, and volunteer opportunities allow residents to connect with like-minded individuals and foster a sense of belonging. This strong community spirit is one of the most compelling reasons why I truly cherish living here.

Stuart also offers a high quality of life, boasting a low crime rate, excellent schools, and top-notch healthcare facilities. Moreover, the cost of living in Stuart is generally more affordable compared to larger cities in Florida, making it an attractive choice for those seeking an affordable coastal lifestyle. Notably, property taxes in Stuart are lower than those in neighboring communities to the north and south.

The Martin County Housing Market

If you’re considering making Stuart your home, it’s essential to explore the housing market. As of April 2023, the median home price in South Florida stands at $570,000, representing an 8% decrease from the previous year. While this price range may appear daunting to some, it’s important to note that the median indicates that half the houses are priced higher and half are priced lower.

Currently, the inventory in Stuart is around 2.9 months, with most listings falling between $600,000 and $1 million or higher. This level of inventory has remained relatively consistent for nearly a year. It’s worth mentioning that the available properties tend to be those requiring significant renovations or potentially in need of a new roof, a common concern in the Florida market. When it comes to housing, Martin County generally commands higher prices compared to St. Lucie County to the north, where the median price is $380,000. Moving further south to Palm Beach County, the median price reaches $585,000, marking a 2.7% decrease from the previous year. The inventory in Palm Beach County consists primarily of homes priced between $600,000 and over $1 million. Consequently, housing costs tend to decrease as you head further north along the coast, with each area boasting its own unique attractions and offerings.

Addressing Common Concerns

While Stuart undeniably holds many charms, it’s essential to acknowledge a few common complaints voiced by residents.

1. People Resent Additional Relocations: One significant complaint is the resistance to further population growth in this beloved area. Some residents express concerns about the rapid increase in population. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that many of the current residents faced similar sentiments upon their arrival. Despite the projected population growth over the next 10-15 years, Stuart continues to maintain its wonderful small-town charm, and I sincerely hope it remains that way, fostering a strong sense of community.

2. Traffic and Parking: Another prevalent issue is the challenge of traffic and parking in downtown Stuart. However, the community has implemented various solutions, such as trams and ride-sharing services like Uber, to alleviate these concerns. Additionally, ample parking is available a few blocks away from the main downtown area, allowing visitors to find suitable parking options.

3. Restaurant Reservations during Peak Season: During the November to April season, securing a restaurant reservation can be a challenge due to high demand. However, by planning ahead or opting for off-peak dining times, visitors can still enjoy the culinary delights offered by the town’s establishments.
