Exploring the History and Mysteries of the Tuckahoe Mansion in Jensen Beach, Florida

Jensen Beach, Florida is home to many treasures, one of which is the Tuckahoe Mansion. This historic landmark is rich in history, with many mysteries and ghost stories surrounding it. The Mansion is located on a 4,000-year-old Indian mound, and it has witnessed many significant events throughout its history. In this article, we will explore the Tuckahoe Mansion’s history, its significance to Martin County, the events hosted at the Mansion, and the free activities available to visitors.

The History of Tuckahoe Mansion

The Tuckahoe Mansion was built in 1938 on land that had several owners over time. In 1936, Anne Bates Leach, a Coca-Cola heiress, bought the 54 acres of riverfront woodland and rolling lawns and built the mansion that we see today. Completed in 1939, the mansion was named Tuckahoe, which is a root cooked for many hours before being eaten by north American Indians. The Mansion was the hub of social life and the setting for countless parties from the local area and WW2 soldiers.

In 1950, the Leach family sold the mansion and moved to Palm Beach. The mansion was then sold to a Catholic Church, where two dormitory wings were built, and it operated as a liberal college until the Florida Institute of Technology purchased it until 1986. Afterward, the mansion remained closed for ten years and in dis-repair until Martin County purchased it in 1997. The property became the site of the Indian Riverside Park, which opened in 2001.

The Tuckahoe Mansion underwent a complete renovation and became in demand for private parties, weddings, and more. After a lot of hard work, in 2005, Tuckahoe was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Despite the many significant events that have taken place in this mansion, it is shrouded in mystery and ghost stories. Some have reported hearing a young boy singing or piano music in the auditorium, seeing shadows of people, or just feeling like they are being watched. There are even stories of a resident ghost, the gray lady, and the haunted Tuckahoe ghost tours around Halloween.

The Significance of Tuckahoe Mansion

According to archaeologists, the land on which the Mansion at Tuckahoe stands has a 4,000-year-old Indian mound created by the Ais (Ah-es) Indians spelled AIS. The Ah-es Indians disappeared by 1760 due to disease. They lived along the Indian River in small villages, fished, and made baskets. When recent hurricanes passed this area, some of the bones and skulls of this tribe surfaced, confirming the sacred ground. The Mansion’s history and the Indian mound it sits on make it a significant historical landmark on the Indian River.
